Will NOT work for peanuts

Do you know the difference between rewards and reinforcement?

Reinforcement is anything that strengthens behavior or makes behavior likely to be repeated in the future. In other words it’s what ensures your dog will come when called the next time you ask.

A reward is something given in recognition of an achievement or effort, like a participation trophy. Yawn.

The golden nugget here is that it's important to understand that not all rewards will reinforce behavior. I myself will not continue to work for an employer that only pays me in participation trophies.

Your dog chooses what's valuable to them, not you. So though using praise or dry dog food may work for one dog, your dog may find those rewards lame and not worth working for. Dog: “You want me to come away from this squirrel for some kibble?? No thanks.”

If you want your dog to work for you, find what motivates them, and pay them well!
